Description
The starry body of Nut, Ancient Egyptian goddess of the sky, was often painted on the underside of the lids of sarcophagi, perhaps to comfort and accompany the souls of the dead to the underworld. The female sky-gazer holding a small telescope in her hands is the Catholic nun Suor Celeste, literally Sister Sky, and the daughter of Galileo Galilei, the first human to turn a telescope at the Moon. When I created my first drawing of this image in 1981, the sky-gazer's telescope pointed at Saturn. When I finished this pastel painting in 2023, the James Webb Space Telescope, launched on Christmas Day 2021, had already joined the family of celestial bodies, .
